PROMPT© is a specialized treatment strategy that we are able to incorporate into our speech therapy sessions at Speech Language Pathology in Motion as part of your/your child's treatment plan.
PROMPT System stands for "Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets". It is a dynamic tactile method which can be used for the treatment of motor speech disorders. PROMPT is highly effective for improving speech and helping patients develop sounds because it provides visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic and proprioceptive cues the speech system. It helps reshape individual and connected sounds and sound sequences and improve overall speech ineligibility.
PROMPT provides touch, pressure, kinesthetic and proprioceptive cues to oral musculature (jaw, lips, tongue). The therapist uses her hands to cue and stimulate articulatory movement, while at the same time limit unnecessary movements. There is a PROMPT for every sound in the English language.
To develop an interactive focus or awareness for oral communication.
To develop an integrated, multi-sensory (tactile-kinesthetic) associative mapping for cognitive or linguistic concepts.
To develop, balance or restructure speech subsystems at the sound, word or phrase level.
Increased placement and voicing for speech sound production.
Increased ability to construct whole words, phrases and sentences.
Increased ability to produce speech spontaneously in all environments.
PROMPT© is a treatment method based on a substantial body of research in the areas of motor learning, cognition and social development. For more information about PROMPT research please visit The PROMPT Institute.
According to The PROMPT Institute, Speech Pathologists are the only professionals with the prerequisite knowledge to apply PROMPT in the holistic manner in which it is intended to be used. Therefore, only Speech Pathologists are trained fully to provide PROMPT therapy.
Clinician skill and knowledge is a critical part of treatment success. Becoming PROMPT certified is a systematic and lengthy process. To become a highly skilled PROMPT clinician takes a minimum of one year and can take as much as four years.
To become fully trained in PROMPT, a clinician must complete four essential steps to be able to fully understand the PROMPT technique and apply it appropriately to patients. These steps must be taken in the following order.
Certified PROMPT Clinicians have met stringent requirements set by the PROMPT Institute.
Parents are an important part of the success of PROMPT treatment. Typically, parents and caregivers are not encouraged to PROMPT their child with the exception of Paramater PROMPTs.
This is because PROMPTing incorrectly may cause the child more frustration.
Clinicians trained in PROMPT encourage parents to ask about what the child did in the session, show them the crafts they made, the words they worked on, read the stories that were used to elicit sounds or words, play games that include well rehearsed words or phrases and finally, use the words or phrases the child has learned in other fun and natural environments.
